How Mixergy Flex helps the grid
How small changes to when your tank heats help balance the grid.
The electricity grid works best when the amount of electricity being generated matches what homes and businesses are using. Mixergy Flex helps with this by making small changes to when your tank heats, while still making sure you have the hot water you normally need.
Mixergy Flex is the automatic heating option in the Mixergy app. It learns your hot water routine and plans the best times to heat your tank.
How it helps
Sometimes there’s lots of renewable electricity on the grid, from wind and solar, and not enough demand for it. Mixergy Flex can heat your tank earlier to make use of it.
At busy times, the grid sometimes asks homes to hold off using electricity for a while. We know about these requests in advance, so Mixergy Flex can heat your water beforehand and pause while the grid needs it. You’ll still have hot water, and you’re helping to keep the grid balanced. This is sometimes called Demand Side Response, or DSR.
If your tank heats at a different time from usual, that doesn’t mean anything is wrong. If you regularly have too little hot water, though, follow Tank not heating on a manual schedule instead.
What are Mixergy Flex Rewards?
Each time your tank takes part in one of these grid events, it can earn you a reward. That’s what Mixergy Flex Rewards are all about, so your hot water helps the grid and you get something back for it.
Not every home is eligible, because it depends on where you live and how your tank is set up. How much you earn will also vary from one home to the next. If you turn Mixergy Flex off, you’ll stop earning rewards until you turn it back on.
Turning Mixergy Flex on or off
Helping the grid is part of how Mixergy Flex works, and you can’t switch it off on its own. If you’d rather not take part, you’ll need to turn Mixergy Flex off completely.
To find the setting, open the Mixergy app and select your tank. Tap the menu at the top right, then select Mixergy Flex. If it’s set to Standard or Economy, Mixergy Flex is on. Select Off to turn it off.
Turning Mixergy Flex off also stops your automatic schedule. You’ll need to set up a manual schedule that tells your tank when to heat and how much hot water to get ready, so follow Set schedules and smart control before you switch it off. If someone else manages your tank, ask them to make the change.
If you need extra hot water
You can ask your tank to heat extra water at any time with a Boost. On the Mixergy Gauge (the slim black panel with lights and buttons on your tank), press the Boost Up button marked with an up arrow.
Green lights show how much extra hot water you’ve asked for, and they turn red once that water is ready. A green light can mean your request is still waiting, so it doesn’t always mean heating has started.
A Boost takes a little time. See Set hot water levels and use Boost for how to use it, or Boost not working if it doesn’t seem to work.

Common questions
Can I keep Mixergy Flex but stop it helping the grid?
No. Helping the grid is built into Mixergy Flex. If you’d rather not take part, turn Mixergy Flex off and set up a manual schedule instead.
Will I definitely earn rewards?
No. Only eligible homes can earn Mixergy Flex Rewards, and how much you earn will vary. Turning Mixergy Flex on doesn’t guarantee a payment, so check the current rewards information for your home.
Will I run out of hot water?
Mixergy Flex plans around your usual routine, so it heats your water before any pause. If you need more, you can always use a Boost.
Do I need to change my energy tariff?
No. You don’t need to switch supplier or change your energy plan. Just make sure the prices from your supplier are up to date in the app, and see Set your energy tariff if you need to update them.
What if I rent?
If you rent and pay the electricity bill yourself, our terms say you don’t need your landlord’s permission to take part. You do need to be entitled to use the tank and to allow it to be controlled. If someone else manages the account or pays the bill, ask them before you sign up or change any settings.
