Set schedules and smart control

Let your tank plan heating automatically or set your own heating times.

Your tank needs a heating plan so it can provide hot water around your household’s routine. You can let it plan automatically or choose your own heating periods.

This guide explains both options, then shows how to use them. If someone else manages your tank, ask them before changing its heating plan.

Choose how you want heating to be planned

  • Automatic heating: the tank learns when you normally use hot water and plans around that routine. This option is called Mixergy Flex.
  • Manual scheduling: you choose the days and heating periods, with the amount of hot water you want the tank to maintain during them.

Only one method can be active at a time. If a manual schedule is visible but isn’t running, check whether automatic Flex control is selected.

Use automatic heating with Mixergy Flex

Flex can suit a household that wants the tank to learn its routine rather than entering each heating period.

Open the Mixergy app and select your tank if you have more than one. Look for the control labelled Mixergy Flex and open it. Select:

  • Standard: the suggested starting option for most homes.
  • Economy: prepares a smaller regular amount and may suit a home that uses little hot water. If you regularly run short of hot water, consider selecting Standard instead.

Select the intended option and confirm any change the app asks you to save. Allow about two weeks for the tank to learn your routine. Use hot water normally and request a Boost if you need extra during that period.

Grid Assistance is part of Flex and is required for its automatic scheduling. It occasionally adjusts heating times to help balance electricity supply and demand. See What is Grid Assistance? for the explanation.

If you want to stop automatic heating, turn Flex off and set a manual schedule using the steps below. Turning Flex off also pauses any eligible Mixergy Flex Rewards.

Set your own heating periods

Use a manual schedule if you prefer to choose when the tank maintains hot water.

  1. Open your tank in the app and check that automatic Mixergy Flex control is off.
  2. Open Schedules. Select the option to add a schedule, or open an existing one to edit it.
  3. Choose the days and the start and end times for the heating period.
  4. Set the minimum and maximum hot water levels, using the explanation below.
  5. Save the schedule. Close and reopen it to check that your choices remain.

Leave the tank switched on and allow a full scheduled period to run before changing it again. If it doesn’t heat as expected, follow Tank not heating on schedule.

What do minimum and maximum levels mean?

These settings tell the tank when to request more heat and how much hot water to prepare during your scheduled period.

The percentage describes how much of the tank’s usable hot water capacity is ready to use. For example, 50% means half of that usable capacity is available as hot water. It does not mean the tank is half full: the tank still contains water, but not all of it is ready to use as hot water.

  • Minimum means “start heating if the hot water drops below this amount”.
  • Maximum means “once heating starts, aim to prepare this much hot water”.

An example, step by step

Imagine you have set a minimum of 30% and a maximum of 60% for a morning heating period. These numbers are an example, not suggested settings for every home.

  1. The period begins and the tank has 40% hot water available. That is above the 30% minimum, so this schedule does not yet request heating.
  2. Someone uses hot water and the available amount falls to 25%. That is below the minimum, so the schedule requests heating.
  3. The tank heats towards the 60% maximum. The extra hot water takes time to become ready.
  4. Once the level reaches 60%, this heating request has reached its target.
  5. As your household uses more hot water, the level can fall again. During that scheduled period, another heating request is triggered if it drops below 30%.

The tank is not trying to keep the level at 60% all the time. The minimum is the point that triggers reheating.

Choosing your levels

Think about how much hot water you want to have left when reheating begins. A low minimum means the tank can get lower before it requests more heat, so there is less hot water available while it reheats.

The maximum determines how much it prepares after that request. If you regularly need more, review that target. If a lot is regularly left unused, consider a small reduction.

Keep the maximum above the minimum. Change one level at a time and compare similar days before changing it again. See Set hot water levels and use Boost for help reading the amount available.

These rules describe the manual schedule’s heating request during its active period. A Boost or automatic safety cycle can also request heating.

Going away? Use Holiday mode

In the app, open Schedules and look for the aeroplane icon. Select it and enter your departure and return details, then confirm them.

Holiday mode pauses normal heating while you’re away and resumes it for your return. Check the saved dates, especially when your plans change. If the icon isn’t visible or you’re unsure how to end Holiday mode, ask whoever manages the tank or Mixergy for help.

Keep the tank switched on so its automatic safety functions can operate.

If heating happens at another time

A Boost or an automatic cleansing cycle can cause heating outside your ordinary plan. Frost protection can also start heating when the tank temperature is very low.

Automatic controls and a compatible solar setup can affect timing too. See How Mixergy chooses when to heat if you want to understand the behaviour.

If the schedule has disappeared, follow Schedules disappeared or stopped working. If it is present but you don’t have enough hot water, follow Tank not heating on schedule.

Common questions

What is Mixergy Flex?

It is the automatic heating option. It learns your household’s hot water routine instead of relying on heating periods you enter yourself.

When should I choose Economy?

Consider it if you normally use little hot water. If you regularly need extra Boosts, Standard may fit your needs better.

Can automatic Flex control and manual schedules run together?

No. Check which method is active before editing a schedule. Switching Mixergy Flex off means you need a manual heating plan.

What happens if the water level is already above the minimum?

That minimum-level trigger does not request heating until the level falls below it during the scheduled period. Other functions, such as a Boost or hygiene cycle, can still request heat.

What if I rent?

Use the controls provided to you. Ask your landlord or housing provider before changing managed schedules or installation settings.
