What is Grid Assistance?

Grid Assistance is part of Mixergy Flex. It helps support renewables, balance the electricity grid, and can help your home earn Mixergy Flex Rewards.

Grid Assistance is the part of Mixergy Flex that occasionally lets your tank adjust when it heats water to support the national grid — sometimes called a DSR event (Demand Side Response). It run alongside the automatic scheduling in Standard or Economy mode. 

Enabling Mixergy Flex means:

  • Your hot water tank may heat at times that support the UK grid.

  • This helps integrate more solar and wind power.

Grid Assistance is required for Mixergy Flex. Mixergy Flex is designed to optimise your schedule based on your hot water usage and tariff, while also allowing these grid-balancing adjustments.  

How Grid Assistance Works

  • What a DSR event is: The electricity network needs the amount of power being generated to match the amount being used, moment to moment. A DSR event is a short period where your tank shifts its heating slightly earlier or later to help with that balance — for example, easing off briefly at a time of high demand, or heating up when there's spare renewable generation available.
  • Why this matters: This helps the National Grid balance electricity supply and demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting low-carbon energy like solar and wind. Where your home qualifies, it's also how Mixergy Flex Rewards are earned.
  • System checks: Sometimes, we run software tests to make sure the service works correctly.
  • Opting out: You can disable Mixergy Flex at any time. Doing so also turns off automatic scheduling, so you'll need to set a manual schedule instead, and any home earning Mixergy Flex Rewards will stop building up a balance while it's off.
