Set up a Wi-Fi kit (Nano Router) for a 1.0 controller

If the TP-Link plug won’t work in your home, your installer can fit a Wi-Fi kit (Nano Router)

Most tanks with a 1.0 controller get online through a TP-Link plug, which sends your internet connection to the tank through your home’s wiring. In some homes that may not be possible.

When this happens we recommend purchasing this small receiver that joins your home Wi-Fi and passes the connection on to your tank.

Here are the steps to get it connected:

Step 1. Check you have a 1.0 controller

The controller is the box on the side of your tank. A 1.0 controller has a plastic cover. If yours is a metal box, you have a 2.0 controller and you don’t need this kit, because it connects to Wi-Fi with a small USB dongle instead.

Step 2. Check your Wi-Fi reaches the tank

Stand next to your tank with your phone and open a web page or a video. If it loads without trouble, your Wi-Fi signal is strong enough there. If it struggles, mention this to your installer, because the receiver needs a good signal to work.

Step 3. Share the set-up steps with your installer

Send your installer the steps below when you book the visit, so they know exactly what’s involved. You can copy them into an email or text, or download our installer guide, which has the same steps with pictures.

Part A. Set up the Wi-Fi receiver

  1. Plug the receiver into a standard wall socket. A green light will flash.
  2. On a nearby computer, search for Wi-Fi networks. Select the network name (SSID) printed on the receiver’s label and enter its eight-digit password.
  3. Open a web browser, go to tplinkwifi.net and create a login password to open the configuration menu.
  4. Select Quick Setup, then Next.
  5. Choose Client mode, so the receiver acts as a Wi-Fi bridge for the 1.0 controller.
  6. Select the home Wi-Fi network with strong coverage near the tank.
  7. Enter the home Wi-Fi password and continue.
  8. Keep the default settings and continue.
  9. Click Finish. The receiver reboots and the computer may disconnect, which is normal. When the progress bar reaches 100%, the green light goes out and then comes back on solid.

Part B. Install the receiver on the controller

  1. Isolate both supplies to the tank. Remove the two screws holding the plastic controls cover and lift it off.
  2. Remove the existing Ethernet cable from the top of the controller.
  3. Plug the receiver’s Ethernet cable into the controller’s Ethernet port and the USB cable into any free USB port. Route all the cables along the left-hand side of the controller.
  4. Refit the cover and restore power. Make sure the receiver sits where the Wi-Fi signal is strong.

Step 4. Book your installer and have your Wi-Fi details ready

Contact the installer who fitted your tank. On the day, they’ll need your home Wi-Fi name and password to set up the receiver, so keep them handy. You’ll usually find them on a sticker on your broadband router.

The power to your tank will be switched off for a short while as they work.

Step 5. Check it’s working

Once the installer has finished, you’ll see:

  • a solid green light on the Wi-Fi receiver
  • the Wi-Fi light on your Mixergy Gauge

Your tank is now online. If you haven’t already, download the Mixergy app and add your tank so you can control it from your phone.
