Test an immersion heater

How to test the backup immersion or the PV immersion element.

Use this test for either the backup immersion (for a primary heat source) or the immersion used for PV. The test is the same.

SAFETY

Only carry out electrical or unvented hot water checks if you are competent to do so. Isolate the supply and prove it dead before you remove covers or touch wiring, and never ask a homeowner or resident to access live components.

Test the element

1. Isolate the supply

Isolate the mains supply and test for safe isolation. Remove the live wire to the immersion.

2. Measure the element

Measure across the immersion element. You should see 19 to 20Ω.

  • If it reads within range, the immersion is OK.
  • If the element is open circuit or outside the expected values, it needs replacing. Contact Mixergy support with the MX number.
