Set up the Wi-Fi kit for a Version 1 controller (video)

Set up the Wi-Fi receiver where powerline isn't suitable.

This guide covers setting up and installing the Mixergy Wi-Fi receiver for Version 1 controllers with the plastic controls cover. Use it where Ethernet over power is not suitable.

Kit contents
  • Wi-Fi receiver
  • Power supply
  • Ethernet cable
  • USB cable

The SSID and eight-digit password you need for set-up are printed on the receiver’s label. The receiver joins the home Wi-Fi and passes that connection to the Version 1 controller.

The process

There are two parts. In Part A you programme the receiver to join the home Wi-Fi, and in Part B you install it on the Version 1 controller.

Part A. Set up the Wi-Fi receiver

  1. Plug the receiver into a standard wall socket. A flashing green light should appear.
  2. On a nearby computer, search for Wi-Fi networks, select the SSID printed on the receiver and enter its eight-digit password.
  3. Open a web browser, go to tplinkwifi.net and create a login password to open the receiver’s configuration menu.
  4. Select Quick Setup and click Next.
  5. Choose Client mode, so the receiver acts as a Wi-Fi bridge for the Version 1 controller.
  6. The receiver scans for nearby networks. Select the home Wi-Fi that gives strong coverage near the cylinder.
  7. Enter the home Wi-Fi password and continue.
  8. Keep the default settings and continue.
  9. Click Finish. The receiver reboots into client mode, and it is normal for the computer to disconnect. A progress bar runs to 100%, and the green light on the receiver goes out, then comes back on solid.

Part B. Install the receiver on the controller

  1. Isolate both supplies to the cylinder, then remove the two screws securing the plastic controls cover and lift it off.
  2. Remove the existing Ethernet cable from the top of the Version 1 controller.
  3. Plug the receiver’s Ethernet cable into the controller’s Ethernet port, then connect the USB cable to any free USB port. Route all the cables along the left-hand side of the controller.
  4. Refit the controls cover and restore power. The receiver shows a solid green light and the Wi-Fi light on the gauge comes on. Make sure the receiver sits where the Wi-Fi signal is strong.
Done

The Wi-Fi receiver is now installed and connected to the home network, and the Mixergy system is ready for online functionality.
