Connect a 1.0 or 2.0 controller by Ethernet (video)

Wire a 1.0 or 2.0 controller straight to the router for the most stable connection.

This guide covers how to connect a Mixergy hot water cylinder fitted with either a 1.0 controller or a 2.0 controller directly to the internet using a hard-wired Ethernet cable.

A direct wired connection provides the most stable, fastest, and most reliable connection for your installation, making it ideal where wireless pairing isn't possible or high stability is required.

SAFETY

Before you open the controller cover or make any connection, switch off all electrical supplies to the cylinder and follow safe isolation procedure, as set out in the installation manual.

Identifying Your Controller

Before beginning, identify which controller version is installed on the cylinder:

  • Controller 1.0: Identified by a plastic control cover.
  • Controller 2.0: Identified by a metal control cover.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

1. Safety Isolation

  • Before opening the controller cover or making electrical adjustments, ensure all electrical supplies to the cylinder are safely isolated.

2. Locating & Connecting the Ethernet Port

The Ethernet connection method differs depending on the controller version:

  • For Controller 1.0:
    1. Unscrew and remove the plastic cover of the controller to locate the internal Ethernet cable.
    2. Disconnect the internal cable from the controller.
    3. Replace it with an Ethernet cable running directly to the home network, plugging into a router, a network switch, or an Ethernet wall port (often located in or near the cylinder cupboard in newer builds).
  • For Controller 2.0:
    1. Locate the Ethernet port directly on the bottom of the controller (no cover removal required).
    2. Plug an Ethernet cable straight into the bottom port and run it to the router, network switch, or Ethernet wall port.

3. Power Up & Verification

  • Once the Ethernet cable is connected securely, refit the controller cover (if removed for Controller 1.0) and restore power to the cylinder.
  • The controller will automatically detect the wired connection and confirm internet connectivity.

Troubleshooting & Solar X Installations

If a connection isn't established immediately, check the following steps:

  1. Verify Home Internet: Ensure the home Wi-Fi and main router network are fully operational.
  2. Mixergy Solar X Cable Check (PV Diverter):
    • If installing a Mixergy Solar X model with an embedded PV Diverter connected to solar panels, two similar network cables typically run into the same wall port:
      • One cable carries the internet connection.
      • The other carries the solar diverter signal for the tank.
    • Solution: Because both cables look similar, if they are plugged into the wrong ports, the tank will not come online. Swap the two cables at the switch to test and restore connectivity.
